Who We are

Jump for Joi Speech Therapy, LLC is owned by R. Joi Brown, Speech-Language Pathologist.  Joi is in the midst of her 17th year of practicing Speech-Language Pathology. This Birmingham native completed her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Alabama A&M University. Most of her career has focused on providing speech and language therapy to the pediatric population (primarily the school setting) ranging from private practice, research hospital, early intervention, and clinical settings in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee.

While in Tennessee, Joi worked in research at Vanderbilt University for 4 years. Joi worked in a research lab that focused on teaching vocabulary to children with Autism and other developmental delays using play-based strategies.  This position was a launching pad for the focus of Joi’s private practice endeavors.   Joi also had the pleasure of working as a summer clinical supervisor at Tennessee State University, as well as in research, assisting patients with a history of strokes.

In light of the pandemic,  Joi started her private practice, Jump for Joi Speech Therapy, LLC, serving clients in homes and daycares.  Joi also wrote her first children's book, I Am Early, documenting her daughter's premature birth experience.

Joi holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA). She also is licensed by the Alabama Board of Examiners in Speech Pathology and Audiology.  Joi also holds a  Speech-Language Pathology Professional Educator Certificate from the state of Alabama.

In July 2022, Joi obtained certification as an Autism Spectrum Disorder  Clinical Specialist (ASD-CS).  This is one of her biggest passions.

What We do

Articulation

Articulation

Articulation

Articulation disorders are when sounds are produced with an error. These errors could be replacing the sound for another sound, deleting the sound, adding another sound to the target sound, or distorting the sound.

Language

Articulation

Articulation

Language disorders or language impairments are disorders that involve the processing of information. Problems that may be experienced can involve grammar (syntax and/or morphology), semantics (meaning), or social skills regarding various aspects of receptive (understanding) and expressive (speaking, written) language.

Stuttering

Articulation

Stuttering

Fluency (stuttering) disorders may present as blocks, prolongations (sssstop), and repetitions (sounds or words) in speech.  Stuttering can change from day to day. You may have times when you are fluent and times when you stutter more. Stress or excitement may lead to more stuttering.

Children's Book Author

Joi has written one children's book, I Am Early, which is a book about her daughter's NICU experience. She is currently working on her second book with hopes of a completion date by the end of 2023.
